The Print-Ready File Checklist (Bleed, Resolution and Color)

Avoid reprints and surprises. Five things every file needs before it goes to press.

A design that looks perfect on screen can still print badly. Run through this checklist before you send anything to press.

  1. Bleed: extend backgrounds 0.125 in past the trim line.
  2. Safe zone: keep text 0.125 in inside the trim.
  3. Resolution: 300 DPI at final size.
  4. Color: design in CMYK for print; expect bright RGB greens and blues to shift.
  5. Fonts: outline them or embed them in the PDF.
